Switch 2 Display Gets Flak for HDR and Motion Blur

Digital Foundry experts spent two hours testing the Nintendo Switch 2 after it launched worldwide. They found major problems with the new handheld's screen quality. The display performs worse than the original Switch in several important areas. Tech reviewers discovered disappointing results across multiple categories. Gaming fans expected better visual performance from Nintendo's latest hardware.

The HDR feature barely works on the Switch 2's screen. Edge-lit LCD technology limits brightness to just 420 nits maximum. True high dynamic range requires much brighter displays to look good. Motion blur makes games appear fuzzy during fast action scenes. The original Switch actually handles movement better than its newer replacement.

Variable refresh rate support also falls short of expectations. Games stutter when frame rates drop outside the 40 to 120Hz range. Digital Foundry found hidden low frame-rate compensation code that might help later. Nintendo could potentially fix VRR problems through future software updates. The Welcome Tour app reveals this promising technical feature.

Comparing screens shows how much the Switch OLED beats the Switch 2. OLED technology delivers deeper blacks and vibrant colors. The newer system's LCD panel looks washed out next to the premium model. Gaming enthusiasts notice the quality gap immediately. Nintendo chose cheaper display technology for their flagship device.

The Switch 2 still improves over the original Switch in most other ways. Processing power jumps significantly between generations. Game performance runs smoother on the updated hardware. Nintendo delivered meaningful upgrades despite the screen shortcomings. Players will enjoy better gaming experiences overall.
