Switch 2 HDR Flop Leaves Gamers Squinting

Nintendo Switch 2 comes with HDR support but has many problems. The handheld screen uses cheap LCD technology that only reaches 450 nits brightness. OLED screens work much better for HDR because they show perfect black colors. The portable screen cannot display good HDR content because it lacks power.

Docked mode connects to TV screens but still has calibration issues. Display expert Vincent Teoh from HDTVTest found major flaws with the system settings. The console needs special TV features called HGIG to work properly. Most adjustment options confuse users because they lack clear numbers.

Nintendo set the white levels higher than industry standards recommend. This makes games look flat and reduces the impact of bright scenes. The adjustment steps change based on other settings which makes fixing problems harder. Users need HGIG-compatible TVs to see accurate HDR images.

Players can improve their experience by changing several settings. Dark theme mode helps OLED TVs maintain better brightness levels. The HDR output should stay on compatible software only to prevent forcing HDR on regular content. Screen burn protection wastes resources and should be turned off completely.
