DoorDash steps in as SNAP aid collapses

DoorDash will distribute one million free meals and waive delivery fees for 300,000 grocery orders as food stamp funding faces elimination in November. The delivery company launched its Emergency Food Response campaign to support more than 40 million Americans who may lose SNAP benefits if lawmakers fail to reach a budget resolution. The initiative partners with 300 food banks through Project DASH and major grocery retailers such as Sprouts, Dollar General and Wegmans.

Max Rettig, vice president of global public policy at DoorDash, said the company cannot ignore families facing the risk of hunger. The Department of Agriculture warned that SNAP payments may stop next month without congressional action. States such as New York, Pennsylvania, California and Texas have notified recipients about possible benefit disruptions starting next week. DoorDash will also donate food and household items from DashMart locations to community pantries in severely affected regions through nonprofit partners focused on emergency food distribution.
