DRC hands US coup suspects to Washington after sentence cut

The United States has received three of its citizens from the Democratic Republic of the Congo after a dramatic resolution to their coup attempt case. President Felix Tshisekedi commuted the death sentences of Marcel Malanga Tyler Christian Thomson and Zalman Pollum Benjamin to life imprisonment before transferring them to American authorities.

State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce confirmed the handover and reiterated the US government's strong condemnation of the armed attacks that occurred on May 19th. The Americans had been sentenced to death earlier this year for their involvement in the attempted coup against the Congolese government.

The diplomatic exchange took place amid ongoing negotiations between the DRC and the United States concerning mineral development. Recent discussions suggest both countries have made progress in establishing a collaborative framework for future economic partnerships.

US officials emphasized their support for the DRC's legal processes and accountability measures. The commutation of death sentences to life imprisonment represents a significant diplomatic intervention that balances justice with humanitarian considerations. The timing of the transfer coincides with delicate negotiations that could potentially strengthen economic ties between the two nations.

The coup attempt and subsequent legal proceedings have drawn international attention to political tensions within the Democratic Republic of the Congo. By handling the case through legal channels and ultimately transferring the US citizens to American custody, the DRC has demonstrated a commitment to diplomatic protocols and international relations.
