Seoul and Washington rush to confirm Lee Trump summit after the tariff deal announcement

Foreign Minister Cho Hyun announced that officials work to finalize scheduling for the upcoming Lee Jae Myung and Donald Trump summit. The diplomatic meeting will occur within the current month rather than face postponement. Trump previously declared that Lee would arrive at the White House within a two-week timeframe. Washington reduced proposed tariffs on South Korea from 25 percent to 15 percent after securing investment commitments and market access agreements. The foreign minister returned to Seoul after completing diplomatic visits to America and Japan.

Cho met with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other senior American officials during his Washington trip. The discussions reinforced bilateral security cooperation and extended deterrence policies between the allied nations. Alliance modernization efforts focus on enhanced defense capabilities amid challenging global security conditions. The minister dismissed concerns that strengthening American ties might damage relations with China. Both countries agreed to address remaining issues through future working-level negotiations rather than detailed discussions about potential changes to American military roles.
