Dries Mertens hangs up boots at 38 after glory run

Dries Mertens decided to stop playing football at age 38. The Belgian striker holds the record for most goals scored at Napoli during his career there. His deal with Turkish team Galatasaray just ended. Mertens made a video message for his old friend Marek Hamšík from Slovakia. He told Hamšík he would put his boots on one last time for a special friendly game next month.

Mertens spent nine years playing for Napoli and became their greatest goal scorer ever. He found the net 148 times during 397 games for the Italian club. The forward left Napoli for Galatasaray during summer 2022. He helped the Turkish side win three league championships during his time there. The team also grabbed one cup trophy and one super cup with Mertens on the squad.

PSV Eindhoven sold Mertens to Napoli back during 2011. He won the Coppa Italia competition twice with Napoli during 2014 and 2020. The Italian Super Cup also came home with him during 2014. Mertens wore the Belgium jersey 109 times for his country. He scored 21 goals during those international games. His final appearance for Belgium happened at the 2022 World Cup held across Qatar.
