The group, co-chaired by Phindile Baleni and Michael Mabuyakhulu, reported a shift from frustration to tangible action, crediting collaboration between government, business, and community partners. The inspection served as an accountability exercise, highlighting specific improvements in water revenue collection, public safety, and critical infrastructure.
The working group visited several key sites to assess recovery efforts following the destructive 2022 floods. These locations included the upgraded Moses Mabhida Stadium, the vital Umlazi Canal flood protection system, the revitalized Phoenix Industrial Park, and the redeveloped Rivertown precinct. The canal project, which is scheduled for completion in mid-2026, was a particular focus, with financing solutions being advanced through a dedicated workshop.
Officials stated that these collective efforts are rebuilding investor and public confidence in the metro. The ongoing projects, many targeted for completion next year, aim to enhance service delivery for the municipality's 3.9 million residents and solidify Durban's position as a key gateway to Africa.
