EA Shutters Black Panther Studio and Codemasters HQ

Electronic Arts shut down Cliffhanger Games yesterday. The Seattle studio opened six years ago under Kevin Stephens. Stephens had worked on Middle-earth Shadow of Mordor before starting the company. The team was making a Black Panther video game. EA closed the studio without warning.

The company fired 300 to 400 workers at Respawn Entertainment last month. Spanish insider eXtas1s says more cuts are coming. EA plans to close Codemasters headquarters and fire 400 more people. The remaining workers will move to EA Sports F1 and Need for Speed teams. Gaming companies have cut thousands of jobs this year.

EA paid 1.2 billion dollars for Codemasters four years ago. Take-Two had offered nearly one billion but lost the bidding war. Codemasters merged with Criterion three years ago to work on racing games. EA cut jobs at Codemasters last year and lost the WRC racing license. The studio makes Formula 1 games and just released F1 25.
