EC moves Uganda presidential nominations to September 23-24

Uganda's Electoral Commission shifted presidential nomination dates from October 2-3 to September 23-24, 2025. Justice Simon Byabakama explained that the change allows adequate time for post-nomination activities before campaigns begin. The commission must complete ballot sample production, campaign schedule coordination, and candidate agreement signings after nominations close. These essential tasks would compress campaign periods under the original timeline. Presidential hopefuls require support from 100 registered voters across 97 districts.

Candidates must demonstrate advanced-level education or equivalent qualifications for presidential, parliamentary, and district leadership positions. Foreign academic credentials require National Council for Higher Education verification through consultation with the Uganda National Examinations Board. Applicants lacking A-level education must obtain equivalency certificates from the Education Council. The commission requires submission of academic documentation two months before the nomination deadlines. Previous election equivalency certificates cannot substitute for new certifications unless candidates earned higher Uganda-based degrees.
