Malawi authorities have returned William Liabunya to his position leading the Electricity Generation Company following a court decision that dismissed criminal accusations against him and two colleagues. The Chief Resident Magistrate Court in Blantyre acquitted Liabunya alongside Corporate Affairs Director Videlia Mluwira and Finance Director Hophan Chisasa after prosecutors acknowledged insufficient evidence to pursue charges of theft, money laundering and official misconduct related to K3.4 billion.
Liabunya told reporters he welcomed the opportunity to resume contributing his specialized knowledge to national service. The executive had been suspended for nearly two years while facing the allegations. Maxon Chitawo, who assumed leadership responsibilities during that period, recently transferred to Mzuzu University.
