Election Stunt Gone Wrong - Faulty Medical Machine Sparks Outrage

Gutu Mission Hospital Gets Broken Donated Machine.

Gutu Mission is the only major hospital in Gutu District. It has a broken anesthesia machine. The machine was a donation from Lovemore Matuke. He is a Zanu PF senator.

Matuke said he bought the machine in the US for $25,000. But it is an old model, a Mindray and Datex Ohmeda. It may cost only $6,000. New machines cost $8,000 to $12,500.

Anesthesia machines give oxygen and drugs during surgery. They are very important. Gutu Mission has the only surgical room in the district.

Matuke was angry when asked about the machine. "I gave it in good condition," he said. "They just need to fix their power."

He said it was not his job to buy spare parts. He told the hospital to check the machine before taking it.

An expert said the donation was for votes. He said it is sad when politicians do this.

A doctor said the machine is outdated. Most hospitals do not use it anymore. "You may not find parts," he said. "It could be trash."

The hospital staff did not want to talk about the machine. The head, Rev. Mugoni, said he did not know if it worked. Other leaders said they were not there or did not know about it
