A car hit an elephant about 40km from Victoria Falls on Kazungula Road Wednesday night, killing one person. Five others suffered injuries when the animal crashed onto their Toyota Isis roof. The driver passed a stopped vehicle with flashing hazards right before striking the young elephant. All six people remained trapped inside the car for more than half an hour. Wildlife rangers had to shoot the hurt elephant to free them.
The front seat passenger died from crash injuries. Rangers found that these accidents happen often on roads near Victoria Falls. Elephants move freely through unfenced forest areas around the tourist destination. Cars must watch for wildlife crossing roads at night. Many animals roam these protected lands between Zimbabwe and neighboring countries.
