Elgiboh hosts breast cancer awareness event in Bulawayo

The Elgiboh Group held a free breast cancer screening and education event in Bulawayo's North End suburb on Thursday, partnering with the City Council and health providers as part of October's Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Zimbabwe recorded 1,807 new breast cancer cases and 915 deaths in 2022, making it the second most common cancer among women in the country after cervical cancer, with annual increases of three to four percent.

Health officials emphasized that early detection significantly improves survival rates, noting many cases are discovered late due to fear and limited access to screening facilities. The event combined breast cancer awareness with mental health education, addressing the psychological impact of cancer diagnoses on patients and caregivers.

Participants received clinical examinations, wellness checks, and consultations for diabetes and blood pressure. Breast cancer survivors shared their treatment experiences, highlighting the importance of family support through the process.

Northern Suburbs Clinic, Cimas, and Corporate 24 provided services at the event. The 2025 campaign theme stresses that every individual's breast cancer experience differs and deserves equitable, high-quality care.
