England rule out Ben Stokes for The Oval Test, India rest Bumrah

England must proceed without captain Ben Stokes for Thursday's fifth Test against India at The Oval after a shoulder injury sidelined the all-rounder. Vice-captain Ollie Pope assumes leadership duties while twenty-year-old Jacob Bethell joins the batting lineup at number six. The bowling attack undergoes significant restructuring with Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse omitted from the squad. Gus Atkinson, Josh Tongue, and Jamie Overton replace the departed seamers as Chris Woakes remains the sole bowler present throughout the series. Liam Dawson also loses his place among the excluded players.

Stokes demonstrated visible shoulder discomfort during the fourth Test at Old Trafford despite claiming five wickets for 72 runs and scoring 141 runs. His bowling workload decreased from 24 overs to 11 between innings as the injury worsened. India faces a similar disruption with Jasprit Bumrah rested by the BCCI medical staff to preserve his long-term fitness. Akash Deep appears likely to fill Bumrah's position in the pace attack. Both teams enter the series finale with depleted bowling resources.
