Enzo Maresca is out at Chelsea after a dream start turned sour

Chelsea just fired their manager while sitting in fifth place because the vibes were completely off.

Enzo Maresca got the boot from Chelsea despite the club holding a spot in the top five of the Premier League, and the messy exit came down to way more than just results on the field. The 45-year-old Italian manager had won the Club World Cup barely half a year ago at Stamford Bridge, but things went sideways fast between him and the people running the show. Chelsea grabbed only one win from their last seven league games and collected a pathetic six points through all of December, which dropped them 15 points back from Arsenal at the top. The club put out a statement saying both sides agreed that switching things up gives the squad the best shot at salvaging the season across four different competitions, with Champions League qualification still hanging in the balance.

The real drama went beyond the scoreboard and straight into relationship territory with the higher-ups. Maresca had impressed sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, plus co-owner Behdad Eghbali, by landing a top-four finish and snagging both the Uefa Conference League trophy and the Club World Cup during his debut campaign, but that goodwill evaporated quickly. After Chelsea beat Everton 2-0 for their only December league victory, Maresca shocked even his own coaching staff by publicly complaining that many people at the club had given him his worst 48 hours since arriving. The guy also ditched his representation at the Wasserman agency to link up with super-agent Jorge Mendes, and rumors kept swirling about him potentially replacing Pep Guardiola at Manchester City down the line, which he kept shooting down.
