Equity Bank Uganda planted more than 30,000 native trees this year as part of their push to help the environment. The bank worked with the Kenya High Commission and local schools like Busoga College Mwiri to bring back forests across the country.
Uganda loses about 90,000 hectares of forest every year from illegal cutting, charcoal making, and farm growth. Forest cover has dropped from 24 percent in 1990 to under 10 percent in 2022. This loss causes long dry spells, strange rain patterns, worse farm output, dirt washing away, fewer plants and animals, and more floods and landslides in mountain areas.
Equity Bank wants to fix these problems with trees that bring back wildlife and protect water sources. The bank also helps top students go to famous schools like Harvard and Yale through their leaders program. The first group of Uganda students just finished school last year.
The bank supports both the environment and schools to match Uganda's national plans. Their work helps build a country that can handle climate change and has smart people who can take care of both nature and people.
