Equity Bank supports refugees with financial services on World Refugee Day

Equity Bank Uganda helps refugees across the country rebuild their lives through banking services. The bank supports refugee families with money transfers and business loans as Uganda marks World Refugee Day. Over 130,000 families have received cash assistance through nine refugee camps during the past several years.

Derrick Kyambadde runs social protection programs at Equity Bank and shared details about their work with refugees. The bank gave nearly 1.8 billion shillings to around 400 refugee businesses over two years. Women received most of the business support with 7,182 female entrepreneurs getting help compared to 3,867 men.

Cash transfers totaled 301.7 billion shillings across five years and helped families buy food and pay for school fees. Uganda hosts more refugees than any other African country according to Kyambadde. He believes refugees need chances to succeed rather than just charity handouts.

The bank teaches refugees about money management through special training programs. People learn how to save money and make smart choices with their cash. Refugees use special bank cards to withdraw money and buy things they need for daily life.

This system gives refugees more control over their finances and helps them become independent. The program turns refugees from aid recipients into business owners who can support themselves and their communities.
