A former company accountant worked with armed criminals to steal money from his workplace. George Tarisai Marume helped robbers take cash from Steelmate Investments during December 2023. Harare magistrate Donald Ndirowei found him guilty of conspiracy to commit robbery. The court sentenced Marume to four years behind bars with conditions for early release. He must pay back 16,000 dollars to the company before November 30 or serve two full years.
Marume handled all money matters at Steelmate as their main accountant. He collected cash from drivers, customers and other workers every day. Company boss Clive Chisenye usually picked up the money each evening. Marume called his supervisor when Chisenye left work early on December 6. The boss told him to lock the cash away and keep the safe keys.
Armed men broke into the office around 3am the next morning. They threatened security guard Peddington Mugumbate with two guns and roughed him up. The criminals knew exactly where to find the money because Marume had told them. Police never caught the actual robbers who carried out the theft. Court records show Marume planned the entire operation from inside the company.
