Ex-Barcelona chief Alemany flees to Saudi club after Deco row

Al-Ahli Saudi Club moves closer to securing Mateo Alemany for a significant administrative role. The former Barcelona sporting director enters final negotiations with the Middle Eastern club after leaving Spain in September 2023. Barcelona parted ways with Alemany following disputes with current sporting director Deco, despite his previous success working alongside Jordi Cruyff. Sport newspaper confirms the talks have progressed significantly, eliminating the chances of his return to Spanish football. Juventus had considered Alemany for similar positions before Al-Ahli prioritized him for their sports project.

Saudi Arabian teams continue recruiting European administrative expertise to enhance their operations. Ramon Planes directs football matters at Al-Ittihad while Estef Calzada holds similar responsibilities at Al-Hilal. Both executives have achieved notable successes since assuming their roles in the Middle East. Al-Ahli aims to replicate this success by incorporating Alemany into its leadership structure. The appointment would represent another significant coup for Saudi football's growing influence on the global stage.
