Ex-CCC lawmaker and four avoid jail by paying fine

Former CCC lawmaker Amos Chibaya plus his four partners walked free after paying just US$500 each! The court convicted them last week for attending an illegal gathering but spared them jail time. These first-time offenders must stay clean for five years or face six months behind bars. Magistrate Rakafa noted how these do-gooders helped their communities through various charitable works. She decided prison would hurt their families despite believing they planned the crime.

Chibaya stood trial alongside Cosmas Machingauta, Monica Mukwada, Aletta Viremai, and Lancelot Tungwarara for their political activities. The judge gave them a chance to pay up instead of serving time. Their good behavior matters most for keeping their freedom during the next five years. The court acknowledged each defendant's positive contributions to society when deciding their punishment. The magistrate ultimately chose mercy over harsh punishment for these political activists.
