Former Cabinet Minister Joel Gabbuza fights for his life at Mpilo Hospital after attackers stabbed him more than 12 times. Two men used knives and an axe during the Friday morning assault. Police say the 62-year-old politician was caught with a married woman at her rural home. National Police Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the attack but said suspects remain at large. Investigators believe the violence stemmed from a love triangle gone wrong.
The attack happened at Siamakwa Village where Gabbuza had driven a woman home earlier that day. He decided to stay overnight at her homestead instead of leaving. Two attackers waited for him to fall asleep before slashing his vehicle tires. They entered the room and attacked him with sharp weapons during the night. Villagers say the attackers were the woman's husband and his cousin.
Gabbuza suffered deep cuts to his head and hands during the brutal assault. He bled heavily and lost consciousness several times before help arrived. Medical staff first treated him at Hwange Hospital before moving him to Bulawayo for emergency surgery. The former Water Resources Minister served during the 2009-2013 government period. Parliament recalled him last October but he stayed active in local politics.
