Expert warns Malaysians about venomous snakes

Malaysia's Fire and Rescue Department advises citizens that most of the nation's 215 snake species pose no threat, with dangerous varieties limited to cobras, kraits, coral snakes and pit vipers. Northern region King Cobra Squad chief Noorizun Kechik explained that venomous specimens often display distinctive characteristics, including hooded postures in cobras, triangular heads in pit vipers and vivid patterns in coral snakes. He warned that reticulated pythons, despite lacking venom, can fatally constrict victims within minutes through powerful coiling.

Noorizun emphasized maintaining composure during encounters, noting that attacking snakes with sticks or similar objects typically provokes bites. He recommended keeping a distance and contacting emergency services for removal from enclosed spaces. Coral snake bites present particular danger because Malaysia lacks specific antivenin, forcing hospitals to rely solely on wound treatment while patients' immune systems combat toxins independently.
