Father-in-law of Hamzah Zainudin dies after a house fire injury

Abdul Ghani Ngah lost his battle for life at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital this afternoon. The 83-year-old man had been fighting for survival since a deadly house fire more than two weeks ago. Police chief Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad confirmed the death happened around 2pm today. The victim was the father-in-law of Larut MP Hamzah Zainudin. Doctors had kept him in an induced coma to help his recovery from smoke poisoning.

The tragedy began on June 19 when flames tore through a two-story home on Jalan Raja Abdullah. Fire crews rushed to the scene at 9:15pm but found Abdul Ghani's wife Salmiah Nyak Matt already dead inside a ground floor room. The 84-year-old woman could not escape the deadly smoke and heat. Abdul Ghani was trapped upstairs when the blaze started. Emergency workers pulled him from the burning building and rushed him to hospital.

Four other people managed to flee the house without getting hurt. A domestic helper was among those who escaped the flames safely. The victims ranged from 18 to 49 years old. Abdul Ghani's son Ahmad Ikhwan had spoken about his father's critical condition after the fire. The 57-year-old man watched his father struggle in the hospital for over two weeks before death claimed him.
