Pakistan's Finance Minister Mohammad Aurangzeb warned that his country faces deadly threats from climate change and population explosion. The government official spoke at a ceremony in Islamabad on World Population Day about the crisis hitting the nation. He said the rapidly growing population hurts every part of Pakistani life and drains the country's resources. Pakistan's population keeps growing at a scary rate of 2.5 percent each year while most other countries grow much slower. The minister demanded that provincial governments step up their efforts to control population growth.
Aurangzeb revealed that the federal government plans to spend massive amounts of money fighting the population crisis. He announced that one third of a huge $20 billion deal with the World Bank will go toward population control programs. The World Bank partnership launched in January 2025 and aims to help Pakistani families get better healthcare and family planning services. The minister stressed that women must become part of the workforce to help the country survive and grow. He said including women in jobs remains essential for Pakistan's future development.
The finance chief also shared alarming statistics about Pakistani children suffering from malnutrition and stunted growth. He said 40 percent of kids under five years old have serious growth problems that hurt their development. The government allocated Rs 4.2 trillion for development projects across the country to tackle these problems.
