Fire destroys Wingfield refugee camp, leaving hundreds homeless

A major fire consumed the Wingfield refugee settlement in Maitland during the afternoon of November 6, 2025. Flames destroyed the primary accommodation tent and surrounding informal dwellings, displacing hundreds of residents who lost essential possessions. City of Cape Town emergency teams responded swiftly, preventing injuries despite the densely populated site.

Cape Town authorities activated their Disaster Risk Management Centre to coordinate temporary shelter arrangements. Humanitarian organizations, including Gift of the Givers, distributed emergency supplies such as food parcels and bedding materials throughout Thursday night. The settlement, established in 2020, currently houses approximately 150 individuals who fled conflict zones across Central and East Africa.

This incident compounds existing challenges for residents facing potential relocation. Local courts will review an ongoing eviction case involving the site early next year. Many displaced persons reported losing critical identification documents during the blaze, further complicating their legal status. Officials confirmed the fire investigation remains active while temporary housing solutions are prioritized for affected families.
