Fire rips through Aussenkehr, leaves 44 families homeless

A fire wrecked a bunch of homes in Aussenkehr, leaving 44 households without a place to live. The local council chairman, Geritt Witbooi, confirmed they handed out food parcels and temporary tents to the displaced people. The blaze started in one shack before high winds pushed it to others, wiping them out.

Most of the people getting this emergency aid work on the table grape farms there. Witbooi pointed out that this shows the desperate need for better, more permanent housing for those workers. This is not even a new problem for the area.

Strong winds there basically turn any small fire into a total disaster. The same thing happened last year, when flames destroyed over seventy homes made of reeds. It is basically a recurring nightmare for that community.
