Fisheries Dept Boosts Data Skills With R Studio Training

The Department of Fisheries kicked off a ten-day training session on R Studio for its top and mid-level staff in Banjul on Monday, March 3, 2025. R Studio's powerful features help fisheries experts analyze data and conduct research.

Department officials explained that they want this training to build staff skills in using R Studio for fisheries data analysis. They plan to teach participants about stock assessment models that work well with limited data in Gambian waters. Staff members will learn hands-on techniques for analyzing data and assessing fish stocks through practical exercises.

The training mixes classroom learning with real-world practice and group talks. Expert fisheries scientists who understand R Studio and stock assessment will lead these sessions. They'll work alongside local statistics specialists from the Gambia Bureau of Statistics who already know R programming well.

The Department of Fisheries aims to manage Gambian fisheries in ways that last. Fishing creates jobs, provides food security, and brings export money into the country. Good management requires accurate data and strong analysis methods. R Studio offers exactly what fisheries managers need for research and number-crunching tasks.

This program targets officials from different sections of the department, giving them tools to use R Studio for fisheries analysis. They'll focus especially on how to assess fish stocks when data remains limited. The European Union Sector Support Program funds this training under their "Development of Scientific Capacity" goal and their activity to strengthen fisheries department staff through specialized training.
