Flooding slows Johannesburg power repair efforts

Johannesburg electricity customers may face extended service restoration periods as flooding from severe storms complicates repair operations across affected neighborhoods. City Power representative Isaac Mangena acknowledged that waterlogged streets and saturated ground conditions hinder maintenance crews attempting to access damaged infrastructure and complete necessary excavation work.

The South African Weather Service escalated its precipitation alert to Level 9 during weekend downpours that inundated portions of Gauteng province and neighboring regions. Emergency response teams remained deployed to monitor vulnerable zones, though authorities reported no significant casualties. Forecasters anticipate diminishing rainfall intensity throughout the coming period, with intermittent showers still possible.

Utility officials emphasized their commitment to expediting electrical system repairs despite environmental obstacles while advising residents to exercise caution around compromised power equipment and inundated roadways.
