Floods hit Ohangwena schools and homes

Ohangwena's regional governor, Sebastian Ndeitunga, sounded the alarm about severe flooding threatening multiple schools and households along the Angolan border. The water's slow but steady rise poses an immediate risk to communities in Eshoke village and Onamhinda.

Ndeitunga personally toured the affected areas, identifying five schools completely shut down by the rising waters. Oshingunguma Primary, Onghala Primary, Peumba Combined, Bartholomeus Combined, and Udjombala Secondary have all suspended classes due to flooding dangers. The governor warned that without quick action, two households could be completely underwater by the next day.

Local officials are scrambling to respond. Camp tents stand ready for emergency relocation at higher ground, particularly for families in the most vulnerable zones. Children cannot safely travel to schools, creating significant disruption for local education. Flooding represents a recurring challenge that demands long-term solutions.

Engela constituency councillor Elikana Haighumbi explained that the situation stems from weeks of heavy rainfall in Namibia and neighboring Angola. Authorities are actively assessing damage, visiting impacted villages, and developing strategies to support displaced residents. The flood crisis highlights the region's ongoing environmental vulnerabilities and the need for comprehensive flood management strategies.
