Floods kill 59, schools and homes are swept away

The rains in Zimbabwe are straight up killing people. At least fifty-nine people have died since the current rainfall season began, with massive damage to schools, health clinics, and hundreds of homes. The Civil Protection Unit says the property damage totals over a hundred thousand dollars. Manicaland province got hit hardest with twenty-three deaths, followed by Mashonaland West with nineteen and Midlands with twelve. Weather officials had warned the public about heavy rains and lightning, but widespread impacts are still threatening lives and infrastructure across the country.

The human toll goes beyond the numbers. One family of five got stuck on an island in the Tekwane River for five days after trying to cross with a cart before rangers saved them. In a separate border area incident, three women were stranded near Botswana at a river confluence. Flooded bridges blocked rescue teams, forcing authorities to call in air support to lift them to safety and a hospital for checkups. On the infrastructure side, thirty-three schools are damaged, with Masvingo Province seeing the worst impact at seven schools. Several other provinces also reported multiple schools affected.
