Flying Squad Cops Busted For Sh380M Gold Heist

Four police officers face serious charges after courts accused them of stealing gold from a local businessman. James Besigye Kiguuya leads the group that also consists of Simon Owona, Pracid Mulangira, and Monday Tibaijuka. All four men work for the Flying Squad police unit at Kireka barracks near Kampala. They appeared before Magistrate Frank Namanya on Friday for their court hearing. Officers cannot enter pleas because the High Court must handle such serious criminal cases.

Police say the officers robbed John Vian Tumukunde of one kilogram of gold worth 380 million shillings. The theft happened on May 9 at Solent Avenue when the suspects used guns and pistols during the attack. Court papers show the officers planned the robbery ahead of time with other people who escaped. Tumukunde lost gold valued at 105,000 American dollars and 1,000 dollars in cash. Prosecutors continue investigating the case before the next court date.

Judges sent all four suspects to Luzira prison until June 12, when they return for another hearing. Gold scams have become a common problem across Uganda as criminals target foreign businesspeople. Security officers often work with fake lawyers to trick investors out of valuable metals. Some law firms deny helping criminals and claim they provide legal services within proper boundaries.
