Four Men Arraigned in Kanifing Over Conspiracy and Theft

Four guys appeared before Magistrate Mben Faal at Kanifing Magistrate Court, facing charges that include planning crimes together and attacking people before trying to rob them. These defendants - Awa Ceesay, Janko Ceesay, Karamba Singhateh, and Abdou Bah - face multiple serious accusations about events that happened on February 3rd at Westfield in Kanifing Municipal Council. The court papers claim they worked as a team, planning to commit major crimes. They allegedly hurt two people named Alen Mendy and Saigene Mendy by throwing stones and bottles at their heads.

Prosecutors say these four stole many valuable items during their crime spree. The stolen goods included eight refrigerators worth D64,000, twenty Bluetooth speakers valued at D60,000, ten electric rice cookers worth D35,000, and various flat-screen TVs. They allegedly took nineteen folding chairs, four folding tables, tents, mobile phones, cash, jewelry, and watches. The total value reached D374,200, belonging to Ebrima Tamba, Alen Mendy, Alkali Cham, and Salgene Mendy. When asked how they wanted to plead during court proceedings, all four defendants stated they were not guilty of these charges.

ASP Oley Bob Davies represented the Inspector General of Police during the hearing. She requested the judge postpone further proceedings until she could bring witnesses to testify. Davies made clear she had no objections to bail being granted for the defendants. After considering everything, Magistrate Faal decided to grant bail but set it very high at D500,000 for each person accused. Any person serving as their guarantor must be Gambian and provide valid identification, such as a national ID card or passport.

The bail conditions also require each guarantor to sign legal documents swearing they have enough assets to cover the bail amount. These strict requirements show the seriousness of the charges against these defendants. The judge scheduled the next court date for April 8, 2025, when the prosecution plans to present their witnesses and evidence. The case continues as both sides prepare their arguments about what really happened during the alleged February incident at Westfield.
