Frail Mwangi limps into airport on stretcher

Activists carried Boniface Mwangi through Moi International Airport on Thursday afternoon. The human rights campaigner looked weak and could barely stand up alone. Workers prepared to fly him to Nairobi for emergency medical care. Supporters sang songs about justice and fighting torture at the airport. People worry about what happened to Mwangi during his trip to Tanzania.

Mwangi went to Dar es Salaam to attend court hearings for opposition leader Tundu Lissu. Tanzanian police arrested Mwangi and Ugandan lawyer Agather Atuhaire during their visit. Officials sent both activists back to Kenya through land borders. Hussein Khalid from Haki Africa shared photos showing Mwangi hurt and struggling to walk. Khalid said Mwangi suffered serious injuries but keeps fighting for human rights.

Border guards left Mwangi at Horohoro crossing early Thursday morning. Kenyan friends picked him up and drove him to Ukunda in Kwale County. Doctors checked Mwangi at Diani hospital before the flight to Nairobi. Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi confirmed that Mwangi was free from Tanzanian custody. Rights groups demand answers about how Tanzania treated the activist during his arrest.
