Last week, a court found Takudzwa Munyawarara guilty of stealing money from a restaurant boss. Munyawarara runs Exclusive Projects Private Limited. He tricked Mandy Mvukwe, who runs Garwe Restaurant, out of $48,000. She wanted to buy special portable bathrooms to rent out at events.
Harare judge Munashe Chibanda gave Munyawarara an 18-month prison term. The judge cut six months off if he behaves well. The court cut another six months if he paid back all the money by April 15. He must stay behind bars for six months, no matter what. Munyawarara said he did nothing wrong during his trial.
The story started last May when Mvukwe planned to start renting portable bathrooms at parties and events. She talked to Munyawarara because he said he could bring these bathrooms from China. He told her each bathroom would cost $300, including shipping and taxes. They agreed he would bring 160 portable bathrooms.
On June 25, Munyawarara came to Mvukwe's house. Another person named Prisca Chatyoka watched as Mvukwe handed over $48,000 cash. Munyawarara promised the bathrooms would arrive by late July 2023. When that date passed, he started making excuses. He later claimed Mvukwe made up the story to hide something illegal they did together. The court did not believe him.
