Fred Matiang'i Urges Government to Address Citizens' Grievances Amid Protests

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i criticized Kenya's government for ignoring citizen complaints. He spoke during the first anniversary of June 25 youth-led protests. Matiang'i said officials must address public concerns to stop repeated street demonstrations. He called the current violence and destruction unbearable. The former minister demanded a national discussion about Kenya's problems.

Matiang'i questioned how many people must die before leaders listen to each other. He said the country cannot function properly under current conditions. The former official urged all political sides to work together on solutions. He criticized assumptions that young protesters lack genuine reform goals. Matiang'i blamed government leaders for not addressing real problems.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights reported eight deaths during anniversary protests. All victims died from gunshot wounds across six counties. Machakos and Makueni each lost two people during demonstrations. Nakuru, Kiambu, Uasin Gishu and Nyandarua each reported one death. Commission officials expressed concern about human rights violations.

Dr Raymond Nyeris serves as commission vice chairperson and condemned the killings. He urged all groups to respect human life during future events. The commission criticized both government agencies and some citizens for breaking laws. Officials offered condolences to families who lost loved ones. They demanded better protection for peaceful protesters.

Matiang'i said government officials should not pretend serious challenges do not exist. He argued that citizen frustration drives people into streets for demonstrations. The former minister called current conditions painful and unnecessary. He believed more open leadership could have prevented current problems. Matiang'i urged immediate action to address public grievances.
