Free State borders tighten up, festive rush gets extra scrutiny

The Border Management Authority is intensifying security operations at key Free State border posts during the festive season. Commissioner Michael Masiapato is overseeing the enhanced measures at crossings like Ficksburg and Maseru Bridge. The initiative aims to manage increased holiday traffic while combating illegal entry and smuggling.

This seasonal surge in enforcement follows patterns from previous years, where thousands were apprehended for attempting unauthorized crossings. Officials urge travelers to ensure their documentation is valid to facilitate processing and avoid delays. The strategy includes increased patrols and coordinated efforts with other law enforcement agencies.

The operation reflects broader national objectives to secure porous borders and regulate movement. Authorities anticipate high volumes of cross-border travel for family gatherings and holidays. These temporary measures are part of ongoing efforts to maintain border integrity and public safety throughout the peak travel period.
