Fringe party NPD vows to halt Mnangagwa's term bid

The National Progressive Democrats rejected ZANU-PF's efforts to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa's rule past his constitutional two-term limit ahead of the party conference. NPD president Togare Fambi stated the proposal violates Zimbabwe's constitution, and citizens will not accept control by a small group pursuing illegal changes. The succession debate has created divisions within the ruling party, as some members support Vice President Constantino Chiwenga as a replacement for Mnangagwa.

NPD deputy leader Kumbirayi Chenhare expressed confidence that his party can challenge ZANU-PF dominance through grassroots support. Several politicians have pledged to oppose the tenure extension plan despite the fragmented opposition landscape. The ruling party appears ready to capitalize on opposition weakness, but faces internal resistance to the 2030 agenda from faction members backing constitutional term limits.
