Funcom kills The Outsiders to feed its Dune MMO monster

Funcom closed The Outsiders studio as part of recent workforce reductions. David Goldfarb, the studio's creative director and founder, announced the shutdown on social media on Tuesday, stating all employees at The Outsiders and Funcom Stockholm were affected by the layoffs.

The Sweden-based studio employed at least 30 developers, according to its website. Funcom acquired The Outsiders in 2021 while the teams collaborated on Metal: Hellsinger, a rhythm-based first-person shooter that became a significant achievement for the independent studio.

Goldfarb expressed hope for continuing operations in a new form, but requested assistance with business opportunities and employee placement. The studio had survived a previous cancellation of its Darkborn project before creating Metal: Hellsinger.

Funcom attributed the workforce reduction to transitioning from development to maintenance of Dune: Awakening, its survival multiplayer game. The publisher described Dune: Awakening as its largest release in 32 years of game development.
