G20 exit grinds Joburg traffic as frustrated drivers fume

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department has cautioned motorists about persistent traffic disruptions as departing G20 delegations trigger rolling highway closures en route to OR Tambo International Airport, Lanseria Airport, and Air Force Base Waterkloof. Spokesperson Xolani Fihla warned that security convoys will create intermittent standstills lasting up to half an hour on arterial corridors like the R21, R24, N14, and N1, compounding challenges for commuters already navigating severe thunderstorm warnings across Gauteng province.

Authorities recommend alternative pathways through Beyers Naudé Drive, Christiaan de Wet Road, and Chris Hani Road to circumvent congestion zones while encouraging travelers to allocate substantial buffer time. The summit, which hosted representatives from 42 nations and necessitated the deployment of more than 3,500 additional law enforcement personnel, generated revenue through the hospitality sectors but strained the metropolitan transport grid throughout the weekend.
