Galthié praises South Africa ahead of France showdown

French coach Fabian Galthié declined to revisit his team's quarterfinal elimination by South Africa at the 2023 World Cup, instead praising the Springboks as potentially the finest squad in rugby history before their Saturday rematch at Stade de France. South African counterpart Rassie Erasmus acknowledged the compliment while noting French players would disregard such assessments during competition.

Six French starters from the 29-28 defeat two years ago will appear alongside nine returning South Africans, including captain Siya Kolisi in his 100th international appearance. Erasmus downplayed milestone celebrations, emphasizing match preparation over personal achievements as his team seeks to maintain top world rankings against fifth-ranked France.

The Springboks have recorded 19 victories in 23 contests since capturing their second consecutive title on October 28, 2023. Victory would elevate France above Ireland and England in standings, while defeat, coupled with a New Zealand win over Scotland on November 8, would cost South Africa its number one position.
