Gambia Bar Association Endorses Tambedou for ICJ Judge

People across The Gambia cheer for Abubacarr Tambedou after his recent nomination to serve as a judge at the International Court of Justice. His name appeared just days ago, and already, many citizens share their support through news channels. The Gambia Bar Association added its voice, expressing pride about its member's nomination. Mr. Tambedou previously worked as justice minister during important years when The Gambia moved away from dictatorship.

The Bar Association described him as someone deeply committed to fair laws with sharp legal thinking and great leadership skills. They believe he stands out as a candidate who can boost the court's reputation and success. Mr. Tambedou brings tons of experience to this important role. Fellow ministers from across Africa selected him to lead the African Union's committee on justice and legal matters.

He earned another leadership position when ministers from Islamic nations picked him to head their committee investigating human rights abuses against the Rohingya people. During his time as Gambia's justice minister, Mr. Tambedou took Myanmar to court under the 1948 Genocide Convention. His team won historic protections for Rohingya people in January 2020 when the court ordered Myanmar to take immediate action.

Mr. Tambedou played a major role in creating justice programs after the dictatorship ended in The Gambia. He started the Truth Reparations and Reconciliation Committee, helped establish the Victims' Centre, and launched the Constitutional Review Commission. Many observers feel his nomination makes perfect sense given his record. His appointment would raise The Gambia's status in global justice circles and highlight the small nation's big contributions.
