Gambia Scores 38 in Latest Global Corruption Index

A big group that watches how honest countries are shared their report yesterday. They said The Gambia scored 38 points out of 100, which made it number 96 in a list of 180 countries. The country next door, Senegal, did better and came in at number 69.

Many countries around the world have big problems with people being dishonest. Most countries scored less than 50 points, which shows they need to work harder at stopping people from taking what does not belong to them. The average score for all countries stayed at 43 points. These low scores make it hard for countries to fight climate change.

African countries south of the Sahara desert had the lowest scores of any place in the world. Their average score was only 33 points. Almost all of these countries scored less than 50 points. However, some African countries tried very hard to stop people from being dishonest. The Seychelles Islands earned 72 points, which made them the best in Africa. Cabo Verde, Botswana, and Rwanda did well.

Some countries like South Sudan and Somalia had very low scores. They need lots of help to make things better. Other places like Libya, Zimbabwe, and Guinea Bissau also need to work harder at stopping people from taking money that does not belong to them.

This big test of how honest countries are started in 1995. Smart people who know about business and money help decide the scores. They look at information from many different places like banks and special groups that study how countries work. These scores help people understand which countries need to work harder at being honest.
