Gambia Updates Drought Insurance for 2025

The National Disaster Management Agency recently teamed up with several partners for a five-day meeting. They came together at Kololi's Senegambia Beach Hotel to look over drought insurance plans for farmers next year. This review helps protect both vulnerable people and the money already put into farming. The main goal remains to make sure everyone has enough food.

Pa Ousman Jarju from ARC-Gambia talked about where the money comes from. Four big groups fund the program: the Green Climate Fund, the African Development Bank, the World Food Programme, and the African Risk Capacity. The program focuses on three main areas—preparing for risks, cutting down risks, and transferring risks. ARC works mostly on that last part, especially in helping countries handle big financial risks.

The program does more than just pay for insurance. It builds skills among local experts and creates better strategies for dealing with weather problems. Jarju explained how the program gives direct support to The Gambia by helping pay insurance costs and training people to handle crises better. This makes the country more ready to face tough farming seasons.

Mawdo Amadou Jallow described how The Gambia first joined this effort back in 2014. The country signed important paperwork with ARC that year, which let them join the insurance group by 2015. Since then, a technical working group has met every year to adjust the software that predicts droughts. This system watches for bad weather patterns that might hurt farmers across the country.

Freddie Kaku, the Country Engagement Manager for Western and Central Africa, also shared information. He explained that ARC wants to update how it measures risks in The Gambia. This helps them figure out exactly what kind of protection the country needs against future droughts. Their goal is to ensure that The Gambia stays part of the larger African risk protection network.
