Gambia's Road Project Set to Boost Trade with Senegal.
Transport Minister Ebrima Sillah inspected the 102km Kabada Road Project on Monday, highlighting its role in local economic growth. The project spans the Lower River Region and aims to improve trade links with Senegal.
"These roads will bring enormous economic development for our people," Sillah told reporters during his site visit. He noted the routes would help Lumo traders reach markets along the Gambia-Cassamance corridor.
The project, which includes three phases, is led by the Chinese firm Long Jin Construction. Phase 1 connects Kwinella to Wellingara and nearby towns, and Phase 2 links Sare Sajo, Nioro, and Sare Samba. Phase 3 extends to Missira, Senoba Jonki, and Buiba Mandika. Workers have started construction on all phases.
The project features Irish crossings and culverts as key parts of its design. These additions will improve water management and road durability.
"This strengthens trade between The Gambia and Senegal," Sillah said. He added the project brings new business chances to local communities.
The minister outlined other improvements in the area, including electric poles, farm projects, and livestock water points. He called these efforts part of a larger plan to help underserved regions.
"This marks the first time our government has invested such resources in communities neglected since independence," Sillah said. He expressed confidence the contractors would complete the work on schedule.
The Kabada Road Project is part of the broader Lot 3 and Lot 4 initiatives in the Lower River and West Coast Regions.
