Gamtel, the national telecommunications company, is owed a lot of money by government offices and state businesses. The National Assembly's Public Enterprises Committee wants the Ministry of Finance and the SOE Commission to help Gamtel get this money back.
The National Audit Office examined Gamtel's debts. They found that, as of February 2023, government ministries and state enterprises owed Gamtel about 152 million dalasis. State-owned enterprises owed another 45 million dalasis. In total, Gamtel was owed 197 million dalasis.
The money is owed for phone and internet services that Gamtel provided to these places. Many private people and businesses also owe Gamtel money. But Gamtel does not have good records of how much these customers owe them.
The audit also found that Gamtel does not limit the amount of credit it gives to customers. This means that government offices can continue using Gamtel's services without paying for them.
When the audit was done, Gamtel did not have a plan for collecting the money it was owed. The company needs a good system to get the money it is owed.
