German nurse gets life for killing 10 Wuerselen patients

A German court sentenced a 44-year-old former nurse to life imprisonment after convicting him of murdering 10 elderly patients and attempting to kill 27 others at a Wuerselen hospital. Prosecutors determined the man administered excessive amounts of morphine, midazolam, and other sedatives to reduce his responsibilities during night shifts between December 2023 and May 2024. Authorities arrested him earlier this year and continue investigating additional suspected victims, with some bodies undergoing exhumation.

The convicted individual, whose identity remains undisclosed, completed nursing training in 2007 and joined the Wuerselen facility in 2020. Evidence presented during the trial indicated he displayed minimal tolerance for demanding patients and behaved as though he possessed authority over survival. The court designated his actions as demonstrating particular severity of guilt, eliminating eligibility for early release while preserving his appellate rights. The case parallels that of Niels Högel, another German nurse who received a 2019 conviction for killing 85 patients.
