German President Dissolves Bundestag, Sets Snap Election for February

Germany's leader, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, ended the Bundestag on Friday. The Bundestag is like their Congress or Parliament. This means they'll have a big national election soon, on February 23rd.

Steinmeier did this because Chancellor Olaf Scholz asked him to. Scholz is sort of like Germany's president or prime minister. He wanted a new election after he lost a big vote in the Bundestag a week ago.

See, Scholz isn't as popular as he used to be. Some important people left his team in November because they couldn't agree on important money matters.

Steinmeier says Germany needs a strong leader and government. One that lots of people in the Bundestag support. He thinks a new election is the best way to make that happen.

Germany has many big problems right now. The economy is shaky, there are fights in other parts of the world, and lots of people want to move to Germany. Climate change is making things harder, too.

Steinmeier wants politicians to focus on fixing these problems. The people need help, and they don't want leaders who argue all the time.

German law says Steinmeier can end the Bundestag early. But only if the Chancellor asks after losing a big vote. That's exactly what happened here.

Polls show Scholz and his party aren't doing so well with voters. A different group is the most popular now, and experts think that could change who wins the next election.
