Ghana Approves 360 Million World Bank Loan for Road Arrears

Parliament gave Ghana the green light for another massive cash injection from overseas lenders Tuesday. Lawmakers signed off on 360 million dollars from the World Bank after heated debate about the country's spending habits. The money will help pay back road builders who have been waiting for their cash and give support to families struggling with poverty. Finance Committee Chairman Isaac Adongo pushed hard for members to back the deal during the vote. He told them the funds would help fix the broken economy and protect people from hardship.

This latest windfall makes up the second chunk of a huge 900 million dollar bailout package that officials requested from international money lenders. Ghana already received 300 million dollars back during March last year as the first payment. The whole program started under the previous government when economic troubles forced leaders to ask the International Monetary Fund for emergency help during 2023. Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem promised lawmakers that even more money would arrive later this year. He said another 400 million dollars should land during October as part of the third round of rescue funding.

The approval comes as government officials work around the clock to convince nervous investors that Ghana can handle its debt problems. Years of financial stress and global economic shocks have left the country desperate for outside support to keep basic services running.
