NPP Minority Opposes US$360 Million Loan Agreement with World Bank, Accuses Government of Obfuscation

Opposition lawmakers have slammed the ruling party over a massive World Bank loan deal worth 360 million dollars. The NPP Minority Caucus claims the NDC government hides the real reasons behind this huge borrowing spree. Alexander Afenyo-Markin reminded everyone that these same NDC politicians once attacked the previous government for taking on debt. He called them hypocrites who change their tune when it suits them. The Minority Leader said karma was catching up with the ruling party.

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah accused government officials of playing word games to confuse people about the loan. The Ofoase Ayirebi MP said ministers deliberately call it a financing agreement instead of admitting they are borrowing money. He demanded complete honesty from the government about what they plan to do with the cash. Parliament members should not have to guess what politicians really mean when they ask for approval. The ranking member wants clear language about all financial deals.

Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem told lawmakers the money would help stabilize the economy and reduce inflation. He promised the funds would pay back money owed to road construction companies across the country. The minister said vulnerable citizens would benefit from safety net programs funded through this arrangement. Parliament approved the deal on July 1 as part of recovery efforts under an International Monetary Fund program. Officials plan to request another 400 million dollar package from the World Bank during October.
