Ghost of Yōtei locks Ghost series to Japan forever

Sucker Punch Productions confirmed the Ghost video game series will remain set in Japan during a media event ahead of Ghost of Yōtei's PlayStation 5 release later this week. Studio head Brian Fleming told Filipino outlet Ungeek that katana combat and Japanese landscapes form the franchise's foundation, and feudal Europe settings would contradict the series identity. The developer may explore different time periods within Japan's samurai era, which spanned from the late 12th century through the 1870s. Ghost of Tsushima took place in 1274 during the Mongol invasion, while Ghost of Yōtei advances to 1603.

The anthology approach allows future installments to visit unexplored regions and historical moments across six centuries of samurai culture. Both released titles avoided central Japan, leaving additional geographic options for subsequent entries. Fleming acknowledged these constraints limit the franchise's potential longevity compared with series like Final Fantasy or The Elder Scrolls.
